What is the Green Ocean Campaign?

Through Green Ocean Campaign, it is possible
¤ýto spread public concerns on environmental consciousness and green technology to civil society and private sector.
¤ýto reinvigorate domestic and international economy by creating new fields of business such as Green IT and
other industries converging existing business area with green technology.
¤ýto conduct concentrative excavation of outstanding green technologies, enterprises and products and to circulate their
  success cases easily.
¤ýto support sustainable development of related businesses by introducing the companies and inducing other enterprises
  to purchase their products.
¤ýto expand a participation of other enterprises and businesses by introducing certification system, producing publications,
holding seminar, forum and other events.

4 Key Areas in Green Ocean Campaign
Green ocean campaign is focusing on 4 key areas below among newly emerging green technology.

Green IT, raising energy efficiency in IT and its usage
Keeping pace with an rapid growth of IT product usage in everyday life, energy consumption and GHG emission had radically grown causing diverse environmental hazard.
Since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched Energy Star in 1992, a series of cooperative efforts has been suggested by several government agencies, international organizations, NGOs and private sectors and now in 2009, the norm of green IT is being formed as a part of efforts trying to address environmental problems with energy efficiency and productivity control based on IT.
In the center of this newly emerging business, replacement technology of hazardous substances, energy efficiency system and alternative energy is located. As its ultimate goal, green IT is pursuing sustainable development and comfortable life.

Power IT, raising power efficiency and creating next generation growth engine
Power IT is distinguished from existing analog power grid by real time operation, control and supervision that was enabled by convergence of IT and power grid. It raises energy efficiency and reduces environmental foot print in production, distribution and management of electricity.
Conclusively, it is aiming at induction of industrial structure shift by convergence of Korean IT industry sector with international competitiveness. As one of its many economic spinoffs, it can diversify domestic electricity market that is based on single provider system and simultaneously, it can cultivate a competiveness to enter a competition of US GRID 2030 with ten thousand billion dollars and can be positioned as next generation growth engine enabling to create new business chances in other emerging electricity market such as China and India.

Alternative energy, developing renewable energy and other energy source with less
  environmental foot print
Alternative energy is an umbrella term referring to any source of usable energy intended to replace fuel sources, the major contributing factor of GHG emission and global warming.
Two different trends are mainly found in this research field. One is to focus on renewable energy such as photovoltaic power, geothermal power, wind power and tidal power that can be recycled with no limits. The other is to develop another energy source emitting no GHG or less GHG such as coal gasification, biomass and hydrogen fuel.

International environmental regulation, counter plan to global environmental trend
Since the conclusion of the Uruguay Round, green round is coming into effect as one of the major trade barrier and other international agreement based on environmental consciousness is followed up.
Currently, Korea has joined and been under the umbrella of several international conventions including Basel Convention, Montreal Protocol, the Climatic Change Convention, Convention on Biological Diversity, London Dumping Convention and Ramsar Convention. Most recently, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 15) will take place in Copenhagen, 7-18 December, 2009 and it is expected that UN will suggest stronger regulation on climate change and GHG emission based on Kyoto protocol.
